ProF Mark De Ste CroixProfessor Mark De Ste Croix is a Professor of Paediatric Sport and Exercise and has been working with children for the past 30 years. He has published over 150 research related articles, with a focus of children’s sporting performance, and injury risk and prevention. Having graduated as a PE teacher he then completed a PhD focusing on the development of children’s muscle strength. Mark’s research passions are around the development of children’s movement and strength, both at the elite level and with those participating in sport and PE for fun. Mark has worked with a number of professional organisations including FIFA, UEFA, English FA, England Cricket, Barcelona FC and Athletic Club Bilbao. Mark is passionate about sharing his knowledge with coaches and PE teachers to help them deliver effective and fun movement competency sessions for children. |
Dr Jonathan HughesDr Jonathan Hughes is a Senior Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning and has been coaching and supporting youth athletes for 15years. He is an active researcher and publishes articles on training and reduction of injury risk with a focus on youth athletic development. Jonathan’s research passions are around enhancing a young persons movement competency to allow them to reach their potential in their chosen sport, be that to an elite level or to ensure they maintain a lifelong passion for playing sport. As a United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) accredited coach, he is focussed on not just the physical development of a youth athletes strength and fitness, but also on their mindset to work hard and achieve a targeted and realistic goal for their competency. Jonathan has led, developed and facilitated the success of a large number of youth physical development programmes in School settings and in sporting organisations ranging from Rugby to Golf, and it is a passion that he ensures he passes on to the athletes, coaches, teachers and parents he works, ensuring that they understand the importance of effective movement competency in all sports. |
Kirsten Wing
Kirsten Wing is a Lecturer in Sports Therapy. She is a qualified Graduate Sports Therapist with an applied master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning. Her focus population is paediatrics in an athletic setting. Kirsten is a researched focused practitioner who is currently completing a PhD on the effectiveness of a play-based coach education workshop, aimed at promoting physical literacy in children, using a RE-AIM approach. This research is funded by Sport England (UK government agency responsible for growing grassroots sport). Kirsten has supported high profile research projects including a commissioned piece of work (UK Sport and Sport England) exploring public appearances made by Olympic athletes on funded pathways aiming to inspire a nation through Olympic and Paralympic sport. Kirsten has worked in professional and academy sport settings and continues to work with the England Colleges Football pathway. Kirsten is passionate about promoting movement in young people and supporting those who facilitate their movement exploration. |
Dr Francisco Ayala
Dr Francisco Ayala is a visiting Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise who has published 90 papers and over 1,642 citations. Dr Ayala has extensive expertise in injury epidemiology and injury risk and prevention in children. He has helped developed many coach education workshops and has been as the Spanish lead on previous cross continental projects. Dr Ayala is one of the leading experts on using Artificial Intelligence to understand big data in sport and exercise science and has published widely using these techniques. He is highly competent in using Bayesian as well as Machine Learning methods, forms of statistical analysis which is key in research projects. He is a respected statistician who has assisted this research group on many projects providing insight into data and it's wider use. |
Will Roberts
Will Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Development and Coaching. He is an experienced coach developer, supporting coaches within organisations such as the Premier League, The Football Association, GB Hockey, Sport England, the English Cricket Board, the Lawn Tennis Association, Southampton Football Club and Manchester United Football Club. He is an active researcher and focuses primarily on supporting coaches, coach educators and policy makers to understand and develop pedagogical frameworks to support the development of athletes and participants. He is co-creator of the Boing Kids project, supporting Physical Literacy in young people, a Sport England funded project. He has served as Vice Chair (Research) of the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA) and is currently on the advisory board for UK Coaching. Will is a series editor for the Routledge Studies in Constraints-Based Methodologies, focussing on applied sport coaching principles in practice and is enthusiastic about the role play and movement have in developing young people. |
